Here, we take a look at three must-visit destinations that you won’t want to miss on the northern coast.

Three must-visit destinations along Spain’s northern coast

San Sebastián

While a little less famous than Barcelona, San Sebastián is still a popular choice for beachgoers who wish to enjoy the perfect combination of nature with all the amenities and culture you could want. The town runs along a beautiful bay with gorgeous beaches perfect for relaxing in the sun. But if it’s incredible sights you want, then San Sebastián has you covered there, too. The Old Town (known as the Parte Vieja) has a quaint charm, with cobbled streets and restaurants where you can sample a true taste of Spanish tapas.

You should make sure to explore the Castillo de le Mota, the 12th-century castle that reveals pieces of the town’s rich history, and stop by the fine arts museum to enjoy some Spanish creativity. You can also head a few miles out of San Sebastián to visit Hondarribia, which boasts its own historic Old Town area, still rich with mediaeval beauty and surrounded by sheltering walls. Back in San Sebastián, the Baroque and neo-Gothic Basílica de Santa María del Coro is one of the most visited attractions in the area – and when you step foot inside this resplendent 18th-century church, you will see why for yourself.

Bilbao

Bilbao is one of the most unique places to visit on the northern coast of Spain, and part of this is due to the contemporary and unique artworks displayed inside the modern architectural marvel that is the Guggenheim Museum. Since opening in 1997, visitors have flocked from all over the world to see this art museum designed by Frank Gehry, packed full of sculptures, paintings and more. Even its exterior is a wonder! Beyond the Guggenheim Museum, there is still plenty to discover in Bilbao – the area is beloved for its world-class restaurants, with many of them holding coveted Michelin-starred status, but you will find just as much tasty fare in the many authentic tapas bars.

Bilbao is a place rich in contrasts, from the beautiful green mountains surrounding this port city to the towering buildings in the downtown area. There are also beaches just half an hour away by train and plenty of hiking on offer for those who want to get out and explore the natural splendour of northern Spain.

Tarragona

Another of Spain’s cities by the sea, Tarragona is the ideal place to visit if you are looking for a coastal break packed full of history and incredible beaches. Set on the sandy beaches of the Golden Coast (Costa Dorada), Tarragona is a must-visit for travellers, whether you are with family or friends.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tarragona has amazing archaeology left over from Tarraco, the city in which contemporary Tarragona was built. You can still see some Roman ruins, such as the remains of a theatre, a port, an aqueduct, and more – but don’t forget to view the amphitheatre which has majestic views across the ocean waves. Built for up to 14,000 spectators, back in Roman times this site was used for viewing gladiator fights, though today the atmosphere is markedly more sedate and great for snapping some perfect pictures.

For more background on the history of these iconic ruins, you can visit the archaeological museum before relaxing for the day on one of Tarragona’s golden beaches. Or head out and enjoy some of the local cuisine, which unsurprisingly makes the most of its seaside position, with seafood dishes being fresh and plentiful.

Which of these three incredible destinations will you be visiting first? Whether you are seeking history, sun-soaked beaches or gastronomical delights, there is something for everyone. Spain’s northern coast has so much to offer, so begin planning your Spanish holiday now to visit all these hotspots and more.
