With so many working from home, bringing positivity into work and living spaces has never been more important. Feng Shui can help with personal growth and aims to balance features in the home to reflect on the inhabitants and therefore create a balanced and better-quality life.

Online bed and mattress retailer, Bed SOS, worked with a Feng Shui expert to reveal eight ways you can bring good energy to the bedroom, to create optimal sleep and a relaxation space.

Danny Richmond, managing director of Bed SOS, said: “We should all be prioritising sleep and relaxation in our homes, and hopefully people can use these tips to bring positive energy to their bedrooms.

Essential Feng Shui bedroom tips

Feng Shui expert Priya Sher says: “Our homes should be a sanctuary, a place that we can relax and recharge in. The principles of Feng Shui maintain that we live in harmony with our environment. The bedroom is a space that we spend around a third of our life in, so it is vital to have the energy in this space balanced so that we can recharge our own energy.”

Keep electronics to a minimum

“To encourage a restful sleep, keep electrical items to a minimum in the bedroom, as electromagnetic stress drains our energy” Priya advises. They can also disrupt sleep and add noise and clutter. According to a survey carried out by BedSOS, nearly nine in ten, (85%) of Brits don’t currently limit these devices in the bedroom, which could be accounting for bad quality sleep and a negative sleeping climate.

Fresh flowers

7% of Brits say they have flowers in their bedroom, but for the nine in ten who haven’t considered this, they are some of the most beneficial items for the room. Fresh flowers uplift the energy of a space and bring a strong healing spirit as well as luck and blessings. More men will be seeing these benefits already with 7% choosing floral arrangements in their room compared to just 6% of women.

“To support your health place a small orchid plant on the bedside table in the corner diagonally opposite the bedroom door.” Priya advises.

Light candles

One in ten Brits (10%) light candles in their bedrooms, which can be used to purify the energy and help bring inspiration as well as a creative, passionate and vibrant energy to the bedroom. These especially should be used in winter or when feeling lonely says Priya, as they represent a fire element of Feng Shui, bringing romance to the bedroom.

Reflective surfaces

Mirrors bounce energy and light around the room and having these opposite a window can make it hard to sleep. Priya says, “avoid having any large mirrors reflecting you whilst you sleep as these activate the energy and can cause a disturbance with sleep.”

Electronics also have reflective surfaces, especially TV’s, so bad news for those who enjoy watching them in bed, like over a quarter (28%) of Brits. Women are more inclined to a bedtime binge as almost a third say they like to watch TV in bed, compared to a quarter (25%) of men.

Use ambient lighting

While almost two in five (39%) women use bedside lights already, the three quarters of men (75%) who use the main light while in bed will make relaxing difficult due to the bright lights reflecting off the ceiling. Lamps create an ambient vibe which help with a tranquil and chilled atmosphere, perfect for winding down. Those lucky enough to have a larger bedroom can arrange three lamps to create a triangle of light to achieve balance.

Avoid clutter

Too many items cluttering up a bedroom, such as clothes you don’t wear, can block the energy of occupants in the room, so for the one in three (38%) who read in bed, making sure the only books in the bedroom are ones that are being read at the time is important.

Storing items under your bed is a big no, as your own energy needs to flow through it while you sleep, which can’t happen with lots of items stored underneath. This should help with a better night’s sleep for those suffering from not getting enough kip.

Bed placement

Priya tells us, “The bed should ideally be placed in the diagonal corner to the bedroom door. If the room is large, then it can be placed more centrally but always with a solid wall to support.”

The bed should also have room for access on both sides of the bed, even if just one person is sleeping in it.

“Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide balance” says Priya, “The bed must also have a headboard to provide support to occupants.” These are essential for support in relationships and will provide better sleep and a sense of stability in life.

Choose neutral wall colours

Priya suggests avoiding dark colours in the bedroom.

“Paint the walls a peaceful colour, pastels and neutral colours are soothing for the mind. Bright bold shades such as red or neon colours can over-activate the energy and cause unrest,” she advises.
